The Basics of New Jersey Medicaid in 2024 and 2025

2024 Figures
Currently, the income limits for Medicaid in New Jersey are $2,829 per month for an individual and $5,648 for a couple.
For married couples, income can be shifted from the applicant to the non-applicant spouse, if that spouse’s income is $2,555 (eff. 7/1/24 – 6/30/25). In addition, a non-applicant spouse can further increase their Spousal Income Allowance if their housing and utility costs exceed a "shelter standard" of $766.50 per month (eff. 7/1/24 – 6/30/25). The maximum Spousal Income Allowance cannot exceed $3,853.50 per month.
The 2024 resource limitation for the applicant is $2,000, and for a non-applicant spouse, it is $154,140.
For a home exemption claim, the Medicaid applicant or their spouse must live in their home. If there is no spouse in the home, there is a home equity interest limit of $1,071,000 (in 2024).
As of April 1, 2024, the Medicaid divisor is $440.10 per day, for any person who has made an unauthorized transfer of assets during the sixty-month lookback period.
2025 Figures
In 2025, the income limits for Medicaid in New Jersey will be raised to $2,901 per month for an individual, and $5,802 per month for a couple.
